The landscape is characterised by increasingly stringent regulatory requirements imposed by awarding bodies, resulting in a heightened need for comprehensive internal quality assurance. As a consequence, there is growing demand for qualified Internal Quality Assurers across further education, training providers, and workplace learning environments. These professionals play a pivotal role in upholding educational and assessment standards, as well as providing essential support to assessors in these diverse settings.

Where Qualified IQAs Are Needed Most:

Qualified Internal Quality Assurers are in high demand across a variety of educational and training contexts. ²Over 1,500 registered apprenticeship providers rely on the expertise of IQAs to uphold quality standards and satisfy the rigorous requirements set by awarding bodies. Within these organisations, IQAs play a crucial role in ensuring the validity and reliability of assessments delivered throughout apprenticeship programmes.

Similarly, further education colleges, which collectively enrol ³approximately 1.83 million students, depend on IQAs to oversee the quality assurance of vocational qualifications, BTECs, technical qualifications, and functional skills assessments across a broad spectrum of subject areas. Their contribution is vital to maintaining consistency and integrity within the assessment process.

Private training providers also require the input of qualified IQAs to ⁴maintain their approval status with awarding bodies and to guarantee that quality standards are consistently met for vocational qualifications, NVQs, and workplace training programmes. In large organisations with dedicated training departments, IQAs are responsible for quality assuring internal assessment practices associated with in-house apprenticeships, NVQs, and workplace qualifications, thereby ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

Furthermore, ⁵any centre approved by awarding bodies such as Pearson, City & Guilds, or NCFE must employ qualified IQAs to internally quality assure assessments prior to external verification. In all these settings, the presence of skilled IQAs is essential to uphold robust assessment practices and ensure that learners achieve recognised and trustworthy qualifications.

Clear Salary Progression:

⁶Internal Quality Assurer roles generally offer annual salaries ranging from £28,000 to £42,000. There is a clear pathway for career progression within the sector. For example, those starting as Assessment Coordinators or QA Support staff can expect to earn between £24,000 and £30,000 per year. As professionals advance to the position of Internal Quality Assurer, typical earnings rise to between £28,000 and £36,000 annually. Further progression to Senior IQA or Lead IQA roles sees salaries increase to a range of £34,000 to £42,000. For those who move into management, positions such as Quality Manager or Head of Quality offer potential earnings from £40,000, with the most senior roles exceeding £55,000 per year. Additionally, opportunities exist to work externally as an External Quality Assurer or Moderator, where annual remuneration can range from £35,000 to £50,000 or more.
