Course overview

The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (AVRA) has been developed to provide learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to assess vocational learners within educational and training environments. Upon successful completion of this qualification, individuals will possess the competence and confidence to carry out assessments for learners engaged in a broad spectrum of educational pathways. These may include regulated qualifications, further and higher education programmes, as well as a range of assessment activities such as skills tests, assignments, projects, and case studies conducted in classroom, workshop, or simulated settings.

Why this qualification

The AVRA qualification is ideally suited to assessors whose responsibilities are centred within further education, training centres, or other educational settings where the assessment of learners is conducted in classrooms, workshops, or simulated environments. This qualification empowers individuals to assess learners efficiently and with confidence, focusing entirely on education and training contexts without the necessity for access to actual workplace settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The AVRA (Award) focuses solely on assessing vocationally related achievement in education and training environments (classrooms, workshops, simulated settings). The CAVA (Certificate) covers BOTH workplace and education/training settings, while the ACWE (Award) focuses solely on workplace competence assessment. If you only assess learners in colleges, training centres, or educational settings without workplace observation, AVRA is the right choice.

Vocationally related achievement refers to assessing learners on vocational skills, knowledge, and competencies in education or training settings. This includes skills tests, assignments, projects, case studies, and assessments in simulated environments (like workshops or training kitchens), rather than observing them performing their job role in a real workplace.

No, but you do need access to at least 2 learners on a regulated qualification in an education or training setting to complete your practical assessment evidence. This could be in an FE college, training centre, or educational workshop. Many learners secure assessor or trainer positions before or during their AVRA to gain this access.

An Expert Witness is a qualified professional who can observe and verify your assessment practice. To be an Expert Witness, they must hold a Level 3 assessment qualification (CAVA, AVRA, or ACWE equivalent) and have current assessment experience in a relevant area. This is typically a colleague, line manager, or another assessor within your organisation who can objectively observe your assessment activities and provide evidence of your competence.
